What Are Ya'll Talkin' About? Here's my take.

Our people have a hard time telling the difference between actual conservative VALUES and conservative TALKING POINTS. Took me until somewhere in my late twenties to fully see it. From childhood all the way up through the college system, we get conditioned to hate anything traditional, anything conservative — like the word itself is the enemy. But here's the part that should stop you: if you were raised in the church, you were raised conservative. Most of us were. We just had it handed to us as "Christian" instead of "conservative," so nobody flinched.

Hold onto that — VALUES on one side, TALKING POINTS on the other. Because there's one issue where that gap gets so wide the two sides end up holding each other's position and don't even realize it happened. Watch for it.

I say all that to get to this:

Reparations.

Right now conservatives are out here opposing reparations across the board, and I get where they're coming from — I really do. The whole position is that nobody's holding us back in America anymore, that the opportunity is right there for anybody willing to go get it. And they're RIGHT. I'm not even being diplomatic, they're flat-out right. I tell my more liberal, more victim-minded friends this all the time — it's 100% accurate. There's no wall in front of you that isn't in front of everybody else too.

But that's exactly where the thinking stops. And it's groupthink, even when the group happens to be correct.

Because here's the thing — the reparations argument was never about now -”waytaminute” - Read that again. It's not about now. It's about PRINCIPLE. The principle that a race of people was enslaved in this country and there was never any correct recompense for the crime. That's it. That's the whole argument, and people can't hear it because they're so busy answering a question nobody asked. "But you're not oppressed today." Right. I never said I was.

Let me put it in plain terms. If a man borrows real money — not a little, a lot — and dies before he ever pays it back, the debt doesn't disappear because he's gone. It doesn't disappear because his kids turned out fine and don't need it. The debt was real. Somebody owed it. The fact that everybody who could've collected eventually moved on doesn't mean the account got settled — it just means nobody ever made the payment. That's the part folks keep skipping. "You're doing okay now" was never a response to "a debt was owed." Those are two different conversations, and only one side keeps trying to merge them.

And watch what happens the SECOND you bring up principle. Somebody comes running with "well, isn't welfare the payback?" No. Mostly no. I say mostly because not every Black person is on welfare — and honestly, the fact that the rebuttal even reaches for welfare tells you something. It quietly files the entire Black race under "subservient," under "less than," like we're a population on assistance waiting for the next check. Me, my family, plenty of Black families across this country — we were not that, we are not that, and we never will be that. So you can't pay a principle with a stereotype. Those aren't the same currency.

Then there's the part I'll only touch lightly — y'all know why. Go through American history and the Black race wasn't the only group that suffered crimes against humanity on this soil. But look closer: just about every other group got recompensed in some form. Acknowledged. Made whole, or made closer to whole. This country still cuts checks tied to atrocities done to other peoples. I'm not going to lay it all out here, because that's its own video and I'm not trying to trip a guideline doing it sloppy — so put a pin in that one, we're coming back to it. But I'm also not going to pretend it isn't sitting right there. I believe grown adults can handle information. The pattern is the pattern.

And then it gets personal, which is really where I land on this.

I don't suffer in 2026. Let me say that clearly. But my grandfather — who only just passed, in his nineties — was still carrying the residue of all of it. The man was a sharecropper. And understand what that word actually means, because it's another thing I'm going to come back and break all the way down.

The way my grandfather told it, sharecropping was really just a slick way for landowners to get cheap labor and dress it up as opportunity. It didn't even have to be some big plantation — even poorer white farmers who didn't have much land of their own ran the same play. They'd lay the deal out one way, but the sharecropper always ended up doing way more work than was advertised, and the landowner always ended up keeping way more of the crop than was advertised. Funny how that math worked out the same way every single time.

But here's the part that stuck with me — the part you could still hear sitting in his voice all those years later. These men were not helpless. That's what made it cut so deep. They had the skill to own their own land. To raise their families on it, to build whole communities off of it. They KNEW exactly what they were worth. They just landed in a time and a system that would not let them step into that value. Think about what that does to a person — knowing full well what you're capable of, and being boxed out of living it, not because you lack a single thing, but because somebody built it that way on purpose. That's not poverty. That's something heavier than poverty. You don't walk out of an arrangement like that and just shake it off — it gets into how you see money, how you see land, how you see what's even possible for you. He carried that his whole life.

And it wasn't ancient even one generation up. My own mother and father came up as CHILDREN under Jim Crow. Not their great-grandparents — THEM. The people who raised me. You don't come up as a kid under laws that exist specifically to tell you you're less, and then walk into adulthood like it never touched you. It shapes how you carry yourself in a room. It shapes what you teach your own children to expect. So when somebody tells me all of this is history-book material, I'm not picturing a textbook. I'm picturing faces I knew. I'm picturing my grandfather's hands. I'm not okay ignoring that, and I'm not going to.

Now — here's where I turn around and aim at my own argument, because that's the only honest way to do this.

I cannot STAND what the left has done with the past. The way they put their whole weight on it. The racial poison they've pumped into every political conversation, the constant narrative that today is just like the 1960s, just like the civil rights era. Nothing could be further from the truth. We have come a LONG way. Is it perfect? No — and only a fool expects perfect. But the playing field is largely level, the protections against actual racism are written into the law, and the sensitivity around it is real. What the left does is take the fact that things still aren't perfect and twist it to mean “nothing has changed at all.” That's disingenuous. It's intellectually dishonest. And I really, REALLY dislike it.

But — and I have to be a grown man about this — reparations might be the single best example of where you're supposed to apply nuance. Because if a people were oppressed for generations, that doesn't just evaporate because a few generations finally got to live without the boot on their neck. Both things are true at once. I hate the victim mind, the victim olympics, the victim narratives — y'all already know that about me. And I'm still telling you we owe this one more honesty than either side is giving it.

Call me conservative. Traditional. I understand what those words actually mean and I'll wear them — and that's exactly why I'm telling you the right has this one backwards. Recompense for injustice was never a liberal idea. Making the wronged party whole is one of the oldest principles there is. It's moral. It's ethical. It's honorable. It runs straight through the same tradition we stand on every other day of the week. So sit with what's actually happening here: on THIS issue, the people waving the conservative flag walked away from the conservative value, and a lot of folks who'd never call themselves conservative in their life are standing on the real principle — without even knowing that's what it is they're standing on.

That's the flip. The jerseys got switched and nobody announced it. But don't go pinning a "true conservative" badge on me either — because I was never sold out to conservatism as a political ideology in the first place. That's the part most people miss when they try to file me away. I'm not following a party. I'm not following a label. I'm reconciling my values to my worldview, and then letting the chips fall wherever they honestly fall. On this one, the principle and my faith say the exact same thing — recompense for injustice is right, it's moral, it's honorable — so that's where I land. If that puts me on the "left" of this issue and the "right" of the next one, that's the label doing the moving. Not me.

NOW — let me pull apart two things people love to mash together, because this is the part that frustrates me every time it comes up in real life. Believing reparations are OWED is not the same as believing we're actually gonna GET them. Those are two completely different conversations, and in the world we live in right now, they almost HAVE to be kept separate. One question is theoretical. The other is practical. You can hold a rock-solid position on the first without it saying a single thing about the second.

I wear a few hats, and one of them is musician — so let me put it in those terms (random, I know, stay with me). There are players who know an instrument on paper. They'll call out every chord you hit and name every scale you run — the theory is right there at the tip of their tongue. Then you put them on a live gig and the whole thing falls apart. Because knowing it and making it sound good — making it FEEL good, in real time, in front of people — turn out to be two completely different skills. The theory can be airtight while the practice is a disaster.

That's exactly where reparations sit. The principle is airtight: a debt is owed. Whether this country ever actually pays it — in this climate, the way things move? That's the gig. And I'm not betting on the gig. But here's my whole point: I don't let my doubt about whether it'll happen cloud my judgment about whether it should. Those are separate questions, and I keep them separate. As a matter of principle — yes. It's owed.

We came a long way — that's true. And there was a debt this country never paid — that's also true. Grown folks are supposed to be able to hold both of those in the same hand.

There's a whole lot more under this one — the sharecropping system, who else got made whole and why, what Jim Crow actually did to a generation that's still walking around. We're going to pull every one of those threads. Consider this the icebreaker.
